Windows Vista Business Ed.

From: Microsoft®
Price: $199 (upgrade)

The OS we were *supposed* to get in 2003, is finally here. And hey, it doesn't totally suck. I was using Vista RC1 for a while, and it had *alot* of problems and didn't play well with most of my modern software. The final release (I got Business Edition, full version from PowerTogether.com for free... sweet deal), is pretty tight. There are occasional instances of Windows 98/200/xp graphics or windows, but I'm not sure if those are 100% Microsoft's doing.

Vista runs smooth and quick (seems to be speedier than XP in most cases) on my Dell Dimension 4700 2.8GHz Pentium 4 with 1GB RAM and a 256MB NVidia video card. Gives me a Performance Score of 3.0 (my video card seems to be the weakest link).

Apps need to be updated to work within the "Vista Look", like Studio 8 from Adobe/Macromedia...

... but other than inconsistencies like this, it's really not a bad OS.

Update: I took Vista off my Dell computer, which is now my wife's XP machine, and put it into Bootcamp on my Mac Pro on it's own 160GB hard drive. It's quite speedy. Basically it's there for when I want to play Star Wars Battlefront or Battlefront II as I just don't have useful PC applications anymore which makes the OS kinda useless for me.

Tips:

  1. Forget your current Windows setup and do a fresh install... if you're going Vista, you should start anew
  2. Internet Explorer 7 is better than version 6... but it's still crap. Although it's a bit less "pretty", I still recommend using Firefox as your primary web browser
  3. If you're low on RAM or are running lots of applications, turn off the silly "sidebar" to free up some resources. The same is true on OS 10.4+ with the Dashboard. Sure it looks neat, but there's nothing there you *really* need.
